The Essential Packing Checklist for Flying With a Baby

We were recently in India for my sister wedding and it was our first long trip with our little 10 months old. We were honestly confused to fly with the little baby. I did all my research for the trip and prepared the list, a month in advance. I literally did paste a huge A2 page on a wall and started writing down all the essential items my baby would need on the flight and also on her 3 weeks stay across India.

I knew taking an infant on a flight is really tough for parents; at this age, babies generally just want to play on the floor. Flying to India is 16 long hour journey; we choose to transit through Dubai instead of a direct flight to avoid being bolted to the seats. I have documented our flight journey in my recent blog post. Link below –

I would like to add all the essential products I did carry in my cabin bag and check-in. I am as well adding the direct links as well, in case you don’t have time to go to a store.

Milk Bottles: NYC to India is almost 20 hours flight. I know it doesn’t even sound right to fly such long distance with little one. I did pack almost 5 empty bottles for Ava. If in case your little one doesn’t eat, you can hand over a milk bottle. We got these bottles from Amazon and they are pretty nice to hold by her little fingers. the shape is also good to hold..

Formula Containers: We carried formula to make sure she has enough milk whenever she gets hungry. these are Formula Pouring containers made our job super easy and they are so easy to put formula in bottles without having any mess even in car or flights. I would recommend you to buy baby king formula dispenser because it has that oval shape cap which is easier to pour than a circular one. it doesn’t get stuck formula and easier to pour in any bottle. I carried 2 containers for our long journey and it was sufficient until we reach to India..Bottle Wash: We carried bottle wash brush in case all bottles get messed up. we did wash bottle in flight and that helped us in the last min.

Pacifier: Must Must Must. If you forget pacifier, I don’t know what is other option to save you. haha. please carry good brand pacifiers for your LO. We have Dr. Brown’s animal pacifier. We had many pacifiers but all are misplaced. These animal pacifiers are easy to keep up with us and Ava loves it too.

Teether: We know what calms our babies, teether is one of the essential baby thing. We got this cute giraffe teether and fortunately, Ava loves it. it has that melodious sound which makes her giggle.

Pacifier Wipes: This is the essential thing you should not forget while traveling. your baby is gonna throw pacifier anywhere. you can not wash pacifier like 100 times. these wipes are so easy to clean the pacifier and her toy as well. We carried two packs for 3 weeks of stay.

Baby  Socks: Socks are mandatory for all. especially in Flight AC baby needs to be cozy. We got this pair of socs and they are not slippery as they have grip so no worry of baby sleeps off. size of socs is knee level so baby won’t be able to remove it.

Changing Pad Sheets: Since Ava’s birth, we are using these sheets to change her diapers outside. we never put her down on outdoor pads. they are light sheets and easy to carry in a bag. In flight we did. I took one packet for India trip.

Sippy Cup: Our baby is almost 11 months old. She drinks water using a sippy cup. We had 2 cups but she does shake it too much and water used to spill all over. my husband got this Dr.brown sippy cup and it has magic. Even though your baby shakes it lot, it won’t spill over. good for us. haha

Hand and Face Wipes: Carry one pack of hand and face wipes to clean the baby’s hand and face. also get for you as well when the baby throws up on you. it happened to me and these wipes gave me a quick help to clean out the mess.

Baby Food Processor: Not in flight but in India we had to stay in a hotel for the visa. We couldn’t carry our food processor so we got this manual food masher and it made our job easy to prepare her homemade food.

Baby Spoons: Get your baby’s spoon from home itself. Baby doesn’t like sudden new thing. Ava didn’t like flight spoon. Glad I did carry her favorite spoon and it’s also easy for us to feed them. I have this pack of a spoon and the shape of spoon easy to feed.

Toys: Get many small rattling toys including your baby’s favorites ones. Don’t mind if your baby throws out while travel. we lost many and this is how we do travel with baby right.

Diaper: Carry almost 10 diapers for this long journey. Take a brand diaper which is good for your baby’s soft skin.

Water Wipes: Carry water wipes instead of regular one. they are made of 90% water so easy to wipe out. For travel, We always carry water wipes.

Nasal Aspirator: Please do not forget to carry all cold-related products. We forgot and Ava got cold in India. My husband searched all the shops in Madurai and could not find easily. he literately got one from the manufacturer. This helped us to take out her mucus out and its very important because babies won’t be able to do by themselves. This one is easy to clean means it’s hygienic and easy to clean. you can go with whichever good one you have.

Boogie Wipes: Wipes are Ideal for kid baby congestion symptom relief, with natural saline that helps clean and dissolve mucus easily.

Cabin Bag: get a good backpack to manage all this stuff and try to adjust the way you can easily find on time.

Baby Carrier & Strollers: Carrying baby in hand is tough for both parents and child throughout the travel. Since Ava was 2 months we have been using the baby carrier while going out. The baby is comfortable in the carrier and she enjoys outdoor. Mostly when you are flying to other counties you have to go through big lines of immigration and check-ins. You may also have your handbags with you. It is always better to keep baby in carrier or stroller. I would recommend you lightweight carrier and stroller for your little one’s smooth journey. Some airlines may offer free strollers during the transit (Emirates offers one at Dubai) and do use all the privileges (including priority check-in) offered by the airlines.

Travel Bottles: (Moisturizer, shampoo, body wash, baby bottle wash liquid) – Carry your baby’s liquid in travel bottles. you may not find the products India.

Other Baby Items on the Checklist:

Baby dresses– Carry at least 5-6 rompers or easy to wear dresses in case baby pooped out or throw up.

Bibs– Carry few bibs to keep less work for dress changing or baby will spill milk and food all over her dress. You definitely don’t want that.

Medicines– Please carry all type of baby medicine and your’s too as per doctors suggestion.

Sanitizer– Keep at least 2-3 small Sanitizers to use a ton of times.

Napkins– Take one set one napkins to keep the mess away.

Blanket– Get one soft baby blanket if you mind flight blanket.

Winter Jackets– We did carry all of 3 jackets to flight. It is so cold here, we had to wear a jacket and it had to keep with us while coming back too. we have lightweight winter jackets for all of us and also easy to carry in his cabin bag.

Baby’s Fruit Packets– Carry at least 6-8 packets for a long journey. take all favorite packets to feed your baby. Ava didn’t eat flight provided baby food and what she ate fruit organic packet and milk.

Binnie– Keep babies and your binnies on while entering to the airport. We don’t like cold. haha

other like the baby toothpaste, toothbrush, and baby hairbrush.

I hope this information will help you while traveling a super long journey with our little one.

Hey, I am glad you found this article helpful. babies are incapable of blowing his nose. Taking out using our hands, makes it more worst and baby gets more cranky as it hurts.
I am not sure why in India dr do not recommend it but you gotta use it carefully while taking mucus out. use saline drops to soften hard mucus, then you have to take it out using a nasal aspirator. if you do carefully, baby will stay calm as they learn it’s not hurting them.
      Thank You so much 🙂
